Support FAQ

Answers to the most common support questions:

Problem: Flypaper does not install properly and you are unable to open the application.

Solution: The most likely cause is a failure of the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 to install. To fix the installation:

  1. The Microsoft .NET Framework will not install properly unless your copy of Windows Update is active and you do not have any pending updates to install on your computer. You can check the status of Windows update at http://update.microsoft.com.
  2. If your Windows update is active, download the Microsoft .NET Framework file directly from www.microsoft.com
  3. Run the .NET Framework installer.
  4. Then, run the Flypaper installer again. The Flypaper setup Wizard appears and guides you through the rest of the installation.

Problem: Unable to connect to Flypaper.net. Message says “Please check your internet connection”

Solution: Several things can cause this problem:

  • User privileges - Go to C:/Program Files/Flypaper and right click on Flypaper.exe, select Run As Administrator
  • Connecting through a proxy server – To bypass the proxy server, follow this procedure: Clearing Proxy Settings
  • Firewall blocks Flypaper – Check your firewall software and make sure Flypaper is not on the list of blocked sites
  • Computer clock not in sync with your local time zone – Change your computer clock to make sure it is in sync.  (Go to www.google.com and type “Local Time” in the Search box)

Problem: Saving videos causes an error

Solution: Flypaper uses the Huffy 2.1.1.1 codec to render video. It is included in the Flypaper installer. Sometimes that installer does not register correctly with Windows or a different version of the codec may be installed on your computer. Get the zip file with the Huffy files.

  1. Download the zip file
  2. Extract it to a folder on your computer
  3. Right-click the Huffy.inf file and select Install
  4. Restart your computer, open Flypaper, and save as video

Problem: Links to stories are not working

Solution: Stories created in older versions of Flypaper (prior to 1.02) have had problems with connecting to new servers. Update Flypaper to the latest version, re-save your Story, and re-upload the Story to the Flypaper community. Stories will also load a bit faster if you do this.

Problem: Flypaper does not run in Vista

Solution: Flypaper, like many other programs, may not open on some Vista computers. To fix, go to C:/Program Files/Flypaper.exe, right click and select Run As Administrator.

Problem: Story does not upload to community when you share

Solution: Depending on the speed of your Internet connection, uploading a large Story may not complete within a certain timeframe. If possible, reduce the Story size by resizing graphics and trimming video files, before you put them into your Flypaper Story.

Problem: Flypaper crashes frequently when I am building a Story

Solution: Large video files can take a long time to save on some computers. Temporarily remove the video from your Story, finish editing everything else inside the Story, and then add the video back. You may also want to trim your video before you put it in your Flypaper Story.

Problem: Problems logging in through the application. Error message says to reset system clock

Solution: Check your computer clock to make sure it is in sync with your local time zone: Go to www.google.com and type “Local Time” in the Search box.. Temporarily disable your anti-virus to see if that allows you to log in. If possible, white-list Flypaper in your anti-virus software.

Problem: Problems updating to the latest version of Flypaper

Solution: Temporarily disable your anti-virus scan to accept the update. Once you have updated to the latest version, make sure you re-enable your anti-virus scan. If possible, white-list Flypaper in your anti-virus software.

Problem: Web Story does not show up in browser when you click the index.html on your computer

Solution: If anyone tries to save as a Web Story and click index.html or main.swf, they will get a white screen and never see the content. One way to get around this is to save the Story as an .exe file to view the content.

Another workaround is to create a “trusted folder” on your local computer. Then, every time you save a Web Story, copy the files from inside that folder to the trusted folder.

To create a trusted folder the first time, follow the steps in this forum post: http://getsatisfaction.com/flypaper/topics/to_see_local_story_save_as_exe
